According to the government, social events like prayer days and school visits during the third term will still not be allowed in schools.

Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang told schools to strictly follow the ban.

“This circular is meant to ask you to follow the directive and make sure that schools don’t do any of these things.” Kipsang asked, “Please make sure that all the schools that fall under your control are aware of what is in these circulars.”

Fred Matiang’i, who used to be the Cabinet Secretary for Education, banned all social events in the third term in May 2016. This included prayer days, visiting, half-term breaks, sports, award ceremonies, and annual general meetings. He did this to keep candidates from talking to people from outside the party.

On the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams, this was done to stop people from cheating.

Matiang’i said that the prayer days during the last school term are used to trade materials that candidates then use to cheat on the KCPE and KCSE exams.
