Confusion as KUPPET insists the strike is still ongoing but KNUT calls off the strike.

Teachers are confused as a result of the differing positions taken by KNUT and KUPPET over the impending nationwide teachers strike, which is scheduled to start on Monday.

The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has maintained that the strike is still ongoing, despite claims that the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has called off the scheduled teachers’ strike.

All KNUT-affiliated teachers are expected to report to class on Monday for the third term and refrain from participating in any planned strikes, according to a statement made on Sunday by Secretary General Collins Oyuu.

“As a result, the NEC has decided to withdraw the strike action notice that was set to expire at midnight on August 25, 2024, as we have started handling the outstanding administrative issues.”

The National Executive Council (NEC) of KUPPET has maintained that the teachers’ strike is still ongoing and that union-affiliated educators should stay away from the classroom until the grievances raised with the government are addressed.

In response to a question on why the union decided to end the strike, the KNUT Secretary General stated that sufficient goodwill had been shown to support the decision, even though the government was taking its time resolving the issues.

Immediate execution of the second phase of the 2021–2025 modified CBA between TSC and the teaching unions was one of the demands made by teachers that they wanted addressed.

The unions also sought the advancement of 130,000 teachers and the long-term employment of 46,000 Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers. The course of events following the teacher division is still unknown.
