Kuppet and TSC decide to put their differences behind them and drop their court cases.
Kuppet, which stands for the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers, and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) have come to an understanding that ends their ongoing legal battles.
After a lot of talks, the deal was reached between the Kuppet National Executive Board and the TSC. This ended the teachers’ strike.
Now that something new has happened, the union’s main goal is to make sure that the government keeps its promises to Kenya’s teachers, especially those who work in junior secondary schools.
Kuppet Secretary-General Akello Misori confirmed the progress in a news release on Tuesday, one day after calling for a teachers’ strike. He said that the union is going to make the process official with the court.
“The court consent has been finalized by our legal teams, and both sides will present it tomorrow.” “This ends the ongoing legal battles, letting us get back to working together across party lines on the most important issues,” Misori said.
Misori said that the two sides agreed to stop fighting in court.
“When the parties go to court on Thursday, the TSC petition and application from August 26, 2024, as well as the Kuppet application from August 27, 2024, will be settled. This will allow both sides to get back to working together across party lines on all issues,” he said.
Misori said that the court’s approval covers all of the union’s complaints except for two important ones: hiring an extra 20,000 teachers for Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) and hiring 46,000 teachers right away on stable, pensionable terms.
“We’ve made progress on a number of issues, but the TSC has insisted that it doesn’t have the power to guarantee that these teachers will be hired right away because Parliament hasn’t given it the money,” Misori said.
Misori says that the union is still set on its goals, which will help all teachers in the country.
“We are steadfast in our demand that the intern teachers be confirmed right away and that the 20,000 new teachers be hired as agreed upon during the budget-making process for 2024–2025”, Misori said.
Misori said again that approving intern teachers is a very important issue for the union because they want to protect the honor of the teaching profession.
“The union will push this issue hard with the Cabinet Secretaries for Education, Finance, and Labor to stop the TSC from running unfair labor practices.” “We will also talk about it with President William Ruto when he gets back from China,” Misori said.
