KUPPET Requests Talks to End Ongoing Strike; TSC Issues Strict Conditions.

Following its formal plea to stop the ongoing strike, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has placed fresh demands on the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET).

In a letter dated August 29, 224, KUPPET Secretary Akelo Misori the Commission stated that the Union needs to end the work boycott in accordance with the Tuesday court ruling requesting teachers to end the strike.

In response to KUPPET’s letter, Cavin Anyour, the TSC Director of Legal Labor and Industrial Relations, requested the Union to end the strike before it paralyzes educational activity.

Anyuor went on to say that all of the earlier issues brought up by the teacher’s union have already been addressed by the Teachers Service Commission.

Anyuor went on to say that the decision will pave the door for new negotiations to address any other issues brought up by the teachers union.

TSC stated that in order for the parties to proceed with bipartite negotiations on any settled requests, the Union’s position must adhere to the court’s ruling and end the current industrial action.

TSC claims that Sh13.5 billion in funding had been made available by the government to carry out the second phase of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

TSC further declared that teacher salaries and arrears retroactive to July 1, 2024, shall be paid using the aforementioned monies.

However, Francis Atwoli, the boss of the Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU), also asked the TSC to bargain with teachers who are part of the KUPPET union on a return-to-work plan.

Atwoli claimed that TSC had threatened to use a court injunction to end the teachers’ ongoing strike.

The Labour leader went on to say that if the court ruling had been granted prior to the teachers’ demand for a strike, it would have effectively stopped the walkout.

Teachers who belong to the KUPPET union are reportedly urged to report back to work on September 5, 2024, while they await additional orders.
