KUPPET says teachers strike to kick off on Monday as announced before.
It has been confirmed by the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) that the teachers’ strike is set to commence on Monday, August 26 as scheduled. The third term of classes begins on the same day as the strike.
Regardless of their union membership status, all teachers have the assurance that KUPPET Secretary General Akelo Misori is dedicated to defending their rights and interests.
In a democratic vote among its members, the union voted to proceed with the strike. Five members abstained, while 68 of the 73 in attendance voted in favor of the strike.
KUPPET admitted that the Ministry of Labor had designated a conciliator on behalf of the government to assist in settling the disagreement. They did observe that the appointment was made too late, though.
“The appointment was made only two days before the union’s Strike Notice expires at midnight today, leaving insufficient time to resolve the issues within the Notice period,” Misori stated.
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is accused by the union of not carrying out the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) for 2021–2025.
In addition to demanding that all intern teachers be promoted to permanent status with effect from July 2024, KUPPET is demanding the immediate advancement of 130,000 teachers who have reached a standstill in their existing job grades.
Furthermore, as per the agreement, the union demands that TSC swiftly pay teachers’ salary and allowances for the preceding month in order to comply with its legal obligations.
Concerning the teachers’ health insurance, KUPPET asserted that the program is in danger of failing even though Sh15 billion was set up for its upkeep in the current fiscal year.
The government’s commitment to addressing teachers’ issues and its involvement in furthering the education agenda was cited by the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) when they earlier retracted their notice of strike.
