Secretary General Akelo Misori of the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) said that the strike has expanded into a larger fight for justice in the education sector. KUPPET has vowed to continue its statewide teachers’ strike.

Misori expressed dissatisfaction with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) at a National Executive Council meeting in Nairobi, claiming the TSC undermines the Ministry of Labor’s authority to settle labor disputes.

He stressed that TSC had abandoned its conciliatory duties and chosen to pursue punitive steps against the union and its members rather than constructive engagement, while KUPPET had followed all legal procedures in initiating the strike.

Misori clarified that KUPPET’s objectives go beyond pay raises, emphasizing the necessity of reviewing career progression frameworks and appropriately recognizing academic improvements made by teachers.

Strike to Go On
The KUPPET leadership reported during the conference that the strike has caused severe disruptions to schools nationwide, with teachers refusing to give up until their demands are met.

Misori cautioned that such acts could be dangerous, especially with unqualified people supervising pupils. She questioned TSC’s attempts to persuade administrators to keep schools open throughout the strike. He advised school officials and parents to exercise caution and abstain from engaging in what he referred to as the TSC’s “mischievous arrangements.”

“You cannot entrust pupils’ care to underqualified personnel. The teachers who are on strike now are the ones who are capable and qualified to work with these youngsters.

Under these conditions, Misori said, “KUPPET will not be held responsible for any risks parents take by keeping their children in school.”

Misori Questions the TSC and the Government
Misori also urged the TSC and the government to follow international labor norms and respect the bargaining process.

He berated the TSC for failing to acknowledge teachers’ accomplishments in education and for being reluctant to participate in fruitful dialogues. Seen as a battle against systemic inequities in the education sector, he insisted that KUPPET will not back down.

Misori concluded by restating KUPPET’s dedication to redressing these injustices and announcing that industrial action by the union will not end until significant progress was achieved.

He underlined that the strike is a vital step toward ensuring equitable treatment for teachers across Kenya, not a sign of defiance.
