Leaders in Nyanza want TSC to hire people based on affirmative action.
Leaders in Nyanza have asked the Teachers Service Commission to hire people based on their race or ethnicity.
They said this would stop the shortage that many schools in the area are having.
Governor Gladys Wanga of Homa Bay, MP Eve Obara of Kabondo Kasipul, MP Rosa Buyu of Kisumu West, and Representatives Joyce Osogo of Homa Bay and Christine Ombaka of Siaya were among the leaders who spoke out on the matter.
They said that affirmative action would help hire local teachers to fill the jobs of teachers who wanted to be sent back to their home counties.
“It is becoming more common for teachers hired from other areas and sent to Nyanza to ask to be transferred later and go back to their home areas.” Obara said, “TSC needs to hire teachers through affirmative action to make up for the lack of teachers in Nyanza.”
Obara said that Homa Bay county needs more than 3000 more teachers on Monday at Kojwach Primary School in Kabondo Kasipul constituency, where he unveiled the new classes that were paid for by the NGCDF.
Obara, who is a member of the National Assembly’s Education Committee, was worried about differences in how many teachers are hired by area.
“The lack of teachers in Nyanza is a worrying trend, and the government should find a peaceful way to fix it.” “We need more teachers to work in this area,” Obara said.
Buru said that President William Ruto had already spoken out about the lack of teachers.
Buyu said, “What should be done is for him to hire teachers in Nyanza through affirmative action.”
The MP for Kisumu West said he was worried that long-term shortages could hurt the level of education in the area.
“The brand-new classrooms we built for our schools won’t help if we don’t have enough teachers.” “If this keeps up, I can see our kids failing in school,” Buyu said.
Governor Wanga said that investing in education is a smart move that will pay off in the long run by creating a steady stream of useful individuals.
Wanga said, “My government has put a lot of money into education and given 240 students full scholarships up to university.”
She said that 160 modern ECDE classes are being built this year at a cost of sh160 each.
