Night fires destroyed dorms, forcing the temporary closure of two schools.
Following the fatal fire that destroyed the lives of seventeen students at Nyeri’s Hillside Endarasha School, two Makueni County schools were temporarily shuttered on the same day due to separate incidents that started in the dormitories of the educational establishments.
The occurrences happened in Makueni County at Maiani High School and St. Peter Claver Secondary School-Kithuki. Unknown-valued property was harmed in both situations.
A witness at St. Peter Claver Secondary School claims that the fire started while the pupils were in one of the school halls for an entertainment event.
Shortly after the fires started, firefighting teams from the Makueni County Government were sent to the spot.
Following the fire incident at St. Peter Claver Secondary School, two people have been arrested, and authorities are now looking into what caused the two fires.
Concurrently, Maini High School experienced a fire that started while the pupils were there for their evening courses.
But from both events, no casualties were reported.
Since then, the two schools have been shut down.
The catastrophes in Makueni occurred just hours after an inferno at Nyeri County’s Hillside Endarasha Academy rendered 17 students irreparably burned.
The Ministry of Education confirmed the tragedy and disclosed that it and the Ministry of Interior had started working together to determine what caused the fire.
Belio Kipsang, the principal secretary for basic education, reports that fourteen students suffered serious injuries and were taken to the closest hospitals to receive medical attention.
“The Ministry of Education sends its heartfelt condolences to the parents, families and friends of the learners who lost their lives in this regrettable tragedy,” Kipsang stated.
