Nyamira University may locate at Kiabonyoru High School, according to CUE’s investigation.
President William Ruto recently indicated that the Commission for University Education (CUE) is looking into whether Kiabonyoru High School in the North Mugirango Constituency would be a good location for Nyamira University.
To make sure they reach the best verdict possible on the matter, the commission sent a group of “high caliber” experts, led by Chief Executive Officer Prof. Mike Kuria, to the field.
There has been a legal battle going on for a few weeks now, with 44 people—including West Mugirango MP Stephen Mogaka—moving the court to declare Dr. Ruto’s declaration invalid on the grounds that CUE is responsible for recommending appropriate locations for institutions.
The Nyamira County parliamentarians have been at odds about wanting the institution to be founded in their own districts.
As the CUE, our mission is to guarantee that higher education on this property, in this establishment, and in this location has a solid foundation. Prof. Kuria remarked, “We physically came here so that we can say we have seen it.
The CUE Executive Officer clarified that in order to ensure accuracy during the challenge, they were accompanied by elite architects, finance specialists, and attorneys.
The CUE has not yet declared any sites, though.
Local MP Joash Nyamoko and Vice Chancellor Prof. Nathan Ogechi of Kisii University accompanied the CUE team.
In the process of establishing the new varsity, Kisii University is serving as the mentor university.
Prof. Kuria clarified that Kisii University has subsequently made recommendations to CUE about the founding of the new institution.
“We are thoroughly examining the recommendations from Kisii University to make sure that the choices we make are supported by the data we have been able to get from this place. But we have legal obligations to adhere to specific protocols,” he stated.
After they are finished, CUE is supposed to send its recommendations to the Ministry of Education.
When a number of North Mugirango locals arrived at the Kiabonyoru location, they voiced hope that the institution would be housed there.
Prof. Kuria stated, “Our goal is not just to locate the site, but also to make sure that students from all around the nation will be recognized for their skills when they graduate.
He continued by saying that the new institution should provide such high-quality instruction that even the most affluent members of society should be able to send their kids there for education.
Prof. Ogechi repeated the comments, stating that their advice to the government will be supported by evidence.
Mr. Nyamoko, for his part, argued that Kiabonyoru, with its ample space and peaceful surroundings, would be an ideal location for the proposed university.
Kiabonyoru, the highest hill in Nyamira County geographically, is the source of the River Gucha, which empties into Lake Victoria after passing through a number of counties, including Nyamira, Kisii, and Migori.
“Universities offer a wide range of options, much like industries do. Others are campaigning for it to go to their regions of interest because of this. In addition, we have to fight like men and make sure it’s here, Mr. Nyamoko stated.
“The commission’s credibility is in jeopardy because of the drama that was witnessed at Kiabonyoru which was unnecessary,” Mr. Mogaka said. The commission’s visitation of all designated sites supports my contention that Kiabonyoru was not granted university status by the President.
He claimed that Kiabonyoru, which had been given Sh 100 million and was initially suggested as the site of an Eldoret University component college, was a crime scene because the project never materialized and the funds could not be traced.
“Suspects in the theft of the Sh100 million in Kiabonyoru infiltrated their visit, creating a scene and manipulating the independent commission’s visit to give the impression that it had approved the university’s presence there,” Mr. Mogaka stated.
He declared that CUE needed to stop engaging in “shenanigans” and earnestly fulfill its mission.
To establish that Kiabonyoru is a crime scene, we are in court. By sabotaging the visit of an impartial panel and influencing media coverage to be critical of any suggestions CUE may make, they are making matters worse, according to Mr. Mogaka.
