After Sh13 billion release to teachers salary and allowances adjustments implemented by the government in the final phase of the 2021-2025 pay deal, the teachers working in cities will be the greatest beneficiaries .
Based on the Teachers Service commission (TSC) revealed details , the teachers based in Nairobi, Kisumu, Mombasa, Nakuru and Eldoret got the highest housing allowances of between 4,500 and Sh50,000 pay.
Teachers based in Nairobi will be smiling all the way to the bank since they are the highest paid teachers since they got housing allowance of Sh50,000.
Under this category, least paid teacher got a housing allowance of Sh6,750.
These above details on the new salary and allowances are contained in a circular dated August 29 .
These details were released by TSC Chief Executive Officer Nancy Macharia.
On the other hand, those employed teachers working in Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru Cities, Nyeri, Eldoret, Thika, Kisii, Malindi and Kitale got a housing allowance of between Sh4,500 and Sh35,000 respectively.
The circular released on Thursday revealed that TSC allocated payment teachers on the clusters grouping teachers based on the areas they teach from four to three.
Teachers based in Nairobi fall under cluster one while others on the rest of the cities are put together under cluster two.
In as much as housing allowance is a significant financial boost for teachers,more especially those in high-cost areas, the fact is that the allowance in Cluster 3 may not be sufficient to cover the whole amount of housing cost, more so in urban areas.
The above variation in payment at some time could lead to financial strain for teachers in these regions.
Even with this scenario,the above varying allowances across different clusters have been evidently been contributing to disparities in the quality of life for teachers.
A part from the house allowances, every individual TSC teachers will also get commuter, hardship, disability and annual leave allowances.
