To put an end to their ongoing legal issues, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) have reached an agreement.
The lawsuits and countersuits that had been filed between them were settled by a court order that was delivered to Justice Anna Ngibuini Mwaure on Wednesday at the Employment and Labour Relations Court in Nairobi.
The consent states, in part, that the parties are happy to report that they have had bipartite talks in good faith with a view to overcoming the impasse established as a result of the industrial action by KUPPET.
The two main unresolved issues are the appointment of 20,000 more junior school teachers to alleviate understaffing and the confirmation of JSS intern teachers into permanent and pensionable (PnP) contracts.
The employer of teachers disclosed that it has promoted 51,232 instructors through competitive means thus far and committed to increasing the figure when Parliament approves additional funding.
The Commission guaranteed that no educator would suffer consequences for taking part in the walkout.
Following KUPPET’s filing of its Memorandum of Demands, there will also be a round of discussions for the new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) 2025–2029.
TSC also declared that it had reinstated funds for the medical program, allowing teachers to receive care at both public and private facilities.
