After funding is released to verify intern teachers’ permanent employment, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) will start paying them their new salaries.

Julius Ogamba, Cabinet Secretary for Education, stated that Ksh 18.7 billion has been set aside to guarantee 46,000 intern teachers permanent contracts.

In addition to making this news today, Ogamba disclosed that Ksh 13.5 billion has been made available to carry out the second stage of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), which calls for teacher compensation hikes.

With great pleasure, I declare that Ksh 18.7 billion has been allocated for the recruitment of intern teachers and Ksh 13.5 billion for the execution of compensation increases as stipulated in the CBA. According to Ogamba, “We are committed to improving the standard of education and making sure that our teachers receive fair compensation.”

With 21,550 junior school and 4,000 primary school interns hired in February 2023, 450 secondary school interns hired in April 2023, and an additional 18,000 junior school and 2,000 primary school interns recruited in September 2023, TSC currently employs 46,000 intern teachers.

Prior to this, a few junior secondary school teachers had participated in a nationwide strike alongside members of the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), demanding, among other things, that intern teachers be promoted to permanent employment.

The teachers will have to finalize their job contracts with TSC as part of the formalization process, which would formally move them into permanent positions with higher pay.
