TSC plans to recruit 2,000 P1 and 18,000 JSS intern teachers.

In October of this year, 20,000 instructors will be hired as interns by the instructors Service Commission (TSC). 18,000 of these will be used for junior secondary education, and 2,000 for elementary education.

56,000 teachers have already been hired to promote the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC), according to information released by Dr. Belio Kipsang, the Principal Secretary (PS) for Basic Education. The program will be strengthened even more by the 20,000 new personnel.

PS Kipsang also stated that 18,000 classrooms are being built by the government by January of the next year to house pupils in Grade 9. Of these, the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) is being used to build 7,000 classrooms, while development partners are funding 11,000 of them.

He stressed that the government is working with several partners to make sure the required infrastructure is in place and that the government is fully committed to the success of the CBC.

He added, “Plans are in place to guarantee a seamless transition from Grade 9 to Grade 10 in 2026.”

By January 2025, TSC will also verify 46,000 intern instructors as full-time, pensionable staff members. For this endeavor, the government has set out Ksh 18.7 billion. Upon contract termination, the teachers will obtain internship certificates, which will improve their prospects of being hired again in the future.

18,000 junior high school and 2,000 elementary school interns whose contracts were supposed to expire on August 31, 2024, have already had their terms extended by four months by TSC.

The goal of the one-year Teacher Internship Program is to prepare candidates for teaching by strengthening their skill set. It provides mentorship and practical experience to unemployed registered teachers, enabling them to get teaching experience.

TSC internship applications must be submitted online. Candidates must have a PTE or DPTE certificate and be registered with the TSC in order to be eligible for internships in elementary schools.

A minimum of a diploma, a C+ in the KCSE, and C+ grades in two teaching topics are required for junior secondary school applicants. TSC registration is also required.

A copy of their Teacher Registration Certificate, National ID or Passport, National Council for Persons with Disability (NCPWD) card (if applicable), passport-size pictures, NHIF card, and KRA PIN are among the documents that applicants must present during verification.

Monthly compensation for interns at primary schools is Ksh 15,000; for those at junior secondary schools, it is Ksh 20,000. Interns will be awarded a certificate upon program completion, which will aid in confirming their appointment to permanent positions.
