A lot of people don’t like that the University of Nairobi (UoN) posted Ksh50-an-hour job openings for students who want to sign up for the work-study program.

A work-study program is a formal arrangement set up by the university in which registered students do small jobs for different offices while they are in school.
Students can earn money to pay for their living expenses through the program, which also gives them chances to learn new things.

In a message to students, the University of Nairobi asked its most vulnerable students to sign up for the program so that it could help them meet their needs.

Those who signed up for the project would help with different tasks as described and assigned by their immediate supervisor. They would be paid Ksh50 an hour for their work.

Some Kenyans, though, don’t like the amount that is paid per hour and have accused the university’s leadership of what most people call “exploitation.”
One person online said that Ksh50 pay was too low to support a student, especially given the current state of the economy.

“That’s $400 a day. “Workers in construction make more than that,” said another user.

“This is such an insult to the students and a way of getting labour at a very cheap cost and at the the expense of the learners,” a user said.

In its job recommendations, the college made it clear that applicants must be current students in the 2024–2025 school year.
The students shouldn’t be suspended, deferred, or face any other kind of punishment.

UoN says that applicants who are fully registered with their Assistant Dean of Students Office as needy or vulnerable students will be given preference.

A lot of public universities across the country have started the work-study program. However, the amount that students have to pay changes from school to school.
